If you haven’t heard of Microneedling Dermaroller, in short, it tightens, hydrates, reduces scars and improves overall skin appearance. It’s a relatively new treatment with a focus on scars (especially acne scars), wrinkles, stretch marks and is great for facial rejuvenation too. It’s simple, it’s cheap and can also be used for transdermal drug delivery if required.
What is Microneedling?
Similarly to the rest of my treatments, it is a safe and simple procedure that is effective and doesn’t have to be carried out in a hospital. Microneedling Dermaroller uses very small needles to create tiny punctures in the skin. This encourages the body to repair and renew the skin cells - a natural process that triggers the production of collagen and elastin. This will give your skin instantaneous plumpness and tackle skin damage like scars, sun damage, ageing and even dark marks.
Why do we need it?
There has been a gap in the market over the years, calling out for a product or treatment that can help to reduce the appearance of or totally eliminate scars - particularly acne scars. Creams and oils have been tried and tested; some work for some people and others are not so lucky. There’s also a complication with ointments, that skin other parts of your skin can react to the ingredients in them causing irritation, acne or dry skin.
Dermaroller has been labelled as a simple means of treating scars and other skin blemishes. For a start, it’s an office-based procedure (hence why we offer it!) - and it doesn’t need to take place in a hospital despite the use of topical anaesthesia. Microneedling is well tolerated by patients and doesn’t require much recovery at all (less than 24 hours).
What does the treatment involve?
Although treatment will vary slightly from clinic to clinic, generally, the area will be anaesthetised (with topical anaesthesia) and the numbness will last up to about an hour. During this time, the dermaroller is rolled between 15 and 20 times in horizontal, vertical and random directions covering all bases - pin-point bleeding is controlled easily before being wetted with saline pads. The whole process will take about 15-20 mins and I recommend at least a 6 week break between treatments.
If you’re treating moderate acne, we recommend 3 to 4 treatments to see best results, but treatments can be performed on the body as well as the face. The best results are seen after a course of treatments as it gives collagen time to repair, regrow, repair and regrow.
Are there any side effects?
Microneedling is very well tolerated by patients but a very gentle side effect called erythema may sometimes be seen post treatment and can last for about 2-3 days. If this does happen, photoprotection is advised for around a week and sometimes local antibiotic creams may be required. Even with this, you are still able to go back to work and go about your daily life the very next day.
Other than erythema, no other side effects have been reported! The microholes created by the dermaroller close straight away and postoperative infections don’t occur. In fact, microneedling dermaroller is so quick and easy to recover from that many people treat it like any other beauty treatment - relatively fast in and out and back to their daily routines!
What’s the cost?
The treatment is cost effective and is able to do be carried out on all skin types - including areas of the skin that may be unsuitable for laser resurfacing or peeling. For targeted skin areas, we recommend using a Microneedling Dermafix Pen that’s smaller and easier to cover smaller areas with if you only have a small problem area.
